Ministry of the Labour and Productivity has ordered the management of the Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA, to hasten up the payment of salary arrears of stevedoring workers, who had claimed that the management was slow in the payment of the salary arrears.
Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr. Clement Illoh, who gave the order in response to a letter written by the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria complaining about the slow pace of payment of the eight month’s salary arrears of its members nationwide, agreed that adoption of improved system of payment would convince the workers of the government intention to offset the arrears.
He added that such conviction would help to avert industrial actions in the maritime sector “which is a critical sector of the economy”.
Nigerian Pilot Saturday recalls that the ministry, in a bid to maintain industrial peace and harmony in the sector, intervened in salary crisis in the sector by scheduling a meeting with relevant stakeholders in which agreement was reached and memorandum of understanding signed between the ministry, management of NPA and the Federal Ministry of Transport on the modalities to offset the arrears.
However, the Permanent Secretary also urged both the NPA and maritime workers’ union to maintain peace and harmony in the maritime sector, and assured them of the commitment of the federal government to pay the arrears.
He re-emphasized the need for the parties to adhere to the provisions of the agreements with a view to sustaining peaceful Industrial relations harmony, especially with in this period of the new administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
He reminded the NPA management to revisit the content of the Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, and the outcome of the meeting held with the management of Nigeria Ports Authority and Federal Ministry of Transport over the non-payment of Dockworkers, in which they agreed to offset the arrears in order to maintain industrial harmony in the sector.
Recall that the Maritime Workers have also held series of protest in the past to remind the government of the need to compel the management of NPA to pay them their eight months arrears of salaries.
